::: The Dome ::: TANGERINE DREAM The bedrock band of electronic pop music, the creators of the so-called Berlin School. Its founder, Edgar Froese, is a Berlin Fine Arts Academy graduate painter, an artist discovered by Salvador Dali. The band celebrating their 50th anniversary this year has been active all along, as one of the most productive ones in pop music history: releasing more than 250 albums. Since the death of the founder two years ago, and in fulfilment of his will, the group has continued working ceaselessly. Their new album, Quantum Gate, was released in September and kicked off in the Top 40-50 position on UK album charts. Milestones 1973 – First album, at Phaedra Richard Branson’s new label, Virgin Records, reached Top 5 on album charts, Gold in more than forty countries. With his first album, Mike Oldfield lays the foundations for Branson’s business career. Following in the footsteps of the unexpected success in Germany, a year later Kraftwerk’s breakthrough follows on the UK market. 1975 – They give a one-off concert in Paris for an audience of a hundred thousand. 1977 – William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, asks them to make the soundtrack of his next Hollywood movie (Sorceror). The movie is a flop, as it is released to audiences during the week of the first Star Wars premiere, but it brings widespread recognition for the band in the US. 1980 – They are the first Western band to perform in GDR, East Berlin. 1982 – They give a full house concert among the very first performers at the freshly built Budapest Sports Arena. 1985 – They score the music for Tom Cruise’s first Hollywood movie, Risky Business, the theme track (Love on a Real Train) becomes an evergreen chillout party hit in the nineties. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9wo0cqq_Mk 1987 – They give a one-off concert at Berlin’s 750th-anniversary event in front of the Reichstag for an audience of hundred thousand people. 1990–2000 – Turning to electronic dance music, they seep in a total of seven Grammy nominations in the meantime. 1998 – After the regime change, the band inaugurates Berlin’s iconic building complex, the Sony Center with a concert. 2001 – One-off concert in Warsaw, they play for a crowd of fifty thousand at a bridge opening. 2014 – They compose the background music and sound effects for the world’s most expensive video game, GTA V, collaborating with one of their most well-known fans, DJ Shadow. The production was sold in more than 50 billion copies in shops, and it’s still a bestseller in the gaming market today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArA3bkumvoI 2015 – Band founder, Edgar Froese dies. Program The band can put together various programs from the band’s fifty-year-spanning repertoire, from a more dynamic to a meditative or diverse show, and are also capable of putting on stage free, 100 percent on-the-spot improvisational performances, either as part of a show (20-50 minutes), or for the whole duration of the program. A part of their visit on A38 Ship in January 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT6EseVwrK4 The band members are the same as at the time of the founder’s death. Ulrich Schnauss – synthesizer, electronic instruments, Thorsten Quaeschning – synthesizer, electronic instruments, Hoshiko Yamane – violin, electronic instruments
